The Year In Sports: My 10 Favorite Pinoy Football goals of 2013

I'm hesitant to call this post the Top Goals of 2013 for the simple reason that I didn't see every goal in every competition, therefore for sure I missed some real gems. Here are just some of the goals that really stood out for me from a great year of Football, in no particular order. Each entry has a link where you can view a video of the goal.

Chris Greatwich bicycle kick against GAU. In the 89th minute the longtime Azkal defied gravity and speared this fantastic overhead past Patrick Deyto of Green Archers United Globe to give Kaya a 3-2 lead. Greatwich was so pumped up he ran all the way to the opposite side of the field to celebrate. Alas, his joy was short-lived. Moments later the Archers equalized in stoppage time. But it doesn't detract from a truly amazing, world-class strike.

Reza Amirkhizan free kick against Air Force. Not only was this the game winner for Pachanga-Diliman over PAF in the Cup semifinals, it was also a great display of the Iranian's technique, as he curveballs the leather into the top right corner. If you can Bend It Like Reza, then you make this list.

Roel Gener bicycle for the Philippine Dolphins against China. The Philippines' Beach Soccer World Cup qualifying campaign in Doha was characterized by heavy blowouts in every game. But the squad did produce this bit of magic on the sands of Qatar, thanks to Army's former Azkal, Roel Gener.

OJ Porteria mazy run versus GAU. The youngster from Falls Church, Virginia leaves five Archers (including the goalie) in his wake with his jaw-dropping dribbling moves enroute to the opening goal. “The Filipino Messi” says commentator Ryan Fenix. We can't disagree.

FEU's Etang Ladero volleys against DLSU ladies. Pinay Football is improving by leaps and bounds. Witness Dumaguete's Etang Ladero, who volleys from the edge of the box past a hapless Inna Palacios in the UAAP Season 75 finals. Sick, sick piece of technique as the Lady Tams went on to rout the Lady Archers. In my commentary on this clip I said I'd put this in my best goals blog post so here it is.

FEU's Jhan Jhan Melliza chest control versus DLSU. The kid from La Paz, Iloilo makes full use of Chy Villaseñor's artful outside-of-the-boot flick, chest-popping the ball into the air then ramming it past La Salle keeper Josh Cruz for a goal. Both the assist and the finish make this one a real cracker of a strike.

Phil Younghusband banana vs Cambodia. Phil retraces the trajectory of David Beckham's bender into the same goal frame of Rizal Memorial. It's the second of his five goals that day against the Indochinese squad as the Philippines ran out 8-0 winners in Challenge Cup qualifying.

Ansing Gustilo half-volley against Green Archers. The 2013 league was difficult for Air Force as they finished last and were relegated to the second tier. But this was one of the bright spots in an otherwise desultory campaign. Gustilo half-volleys off a corner kick into the top left hand corner, beyond Patrick Deyto's outstretched palms.

Mahmood Khan, direct off a corner in the President's Cup qualifier in Cebu. Technically, this has got to be the most outstanding goal in this list. Khan takes a corner kick with the outside of his boot and swerves it past Global keeper Moussa Sanogo and into the net for KRL. Stupendous. Khan came back with the Pakistan NT and tried it again in Bacolod against the Azkals, only then it harmlessly fluttered behind the goal and only threatened one of the ABS-CBN cameras. The original, however, is still terrific. Even if it wasn't scored by a Filipino, it deserves to be in this collection.

Patrick Reichelt against Pakistan in the Peace Cup. Patrick may have finished it off, but the platform is Stephan Schrock's scorching run down the right flank that featured an audacious “rainbow” flick to keep possession, then a patient center down the middle to Reichelt. Fittingly, Schrock scores later off an assist from his fellow Fil-German to propel the Azkals to the win.

Any other goals you think should be on this list? Feel free to mention them in the comments section or tweet them to me. Video links would be good.
