Gymnast Catalina Ponor of Romania was a triple gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics. She made Olympic history by becoming the first Olympic gymnast, male or female, to win gold in every event he or she entered. Her three golds also put her in elite company, being only the seventh gymnast to win at least three golds in the same Olympics.
Ponor won gold medals in the balance beam, floor exercises and team competition. Her score in the beam competition, 9.787, was the highest among all women’s gymnastics events in Athens. She also won the floor by a comfortable margin, garnering a score of 9.75.
Ponor bagged her third gold when Romania won the team competition in a mild upset, beating world champions United States and the always-dangerous Russians. Ponor had mixed results in her competitions after Athens, and quit the sport in 2006. She attempted a comeback a year later, but ultimately missed the Beijing Olympics after retiring at the end of 2007.
