South Korean media on Monday confirmed the suicide death of former Suwon Bluewings player Lee Kyung-Hwan.
A highly-rated young player, who joined Korean giants Bluewings after two seasons with Daejeon Citizen, Lee received a lifetime ban from the K-League following his involvement in the 2011 match-fixing scandal that resulted in punishments to nearly 40 players and officials.
In addition to the ban and a substantial fine, the 24-year-old midfielder was sentenced to 300 hours of community service.
Lee had reportedly not shown up to recent sessions and was said to have been uncertain of his direction in life despite intending to enlist in South Korea's military.
Lee's death is the fourth related to the scandal; Jeonbuk Motors player Jeong Jong-Gwon, Incheon United goalkeeper Yoon Ki-Won and Sangju Sangmu Phoenix coach Lee Soo-Cheol also committed suicide as a result of the investigation.
