Japeth Aguilar’s dunk voted best in FIBA continental championships

The Philippines' Japeth Aguilar elevates for a slam against Qatar in the FIBA Asia Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Chalk up another milestone for Gilas Pilipinas.

Japeth Aguilar’s two-handed dunk off a Gabe Norwood assist was voted as the best alley-oop dunk in this year's FIBA continental championships. The official result was announced Tuesday through FIBA’s official Facebook page.

Aguilar’s dunk garnered 2284 votes in a landslide win. Jonac Valancuinas, who is currently playing for the Toronto Raptors in the NBA, had the second best dunk which garnered 530 votes.

The high-leaping Ginebra forward expressed his gratitude to the people who voted for him through his Twitter account.

Aguilar’s dunk came with 6.6 seconds left in the game to give Gilas-Pilipinas an 80-67 lead against Qatar. Although the game was already won, head coach Chot Reyes designed a pretty play with the athletic big man freeing himself for a wide open jam. Reyes wanted a bigger lead as the quotient for the group stage greatly affected the Philippines’ chances in the knockout stage.

The other entries to the poll were dunks from Angola’s Leonel Paulo, Belgium’s Jean Mark Mwema, Cote D’Ivoire’s Stephane Konate, Mali’s Namory Baundy, Poland’s Marcin Gortat, Spain’s Rudy Fernandez, Ukraine’s Artem Postovyi, and Venezuela’s Donta Smith.
