Pacquiao a favorite against Bradley, an underdog against Mayweather says Mosley

“Sugar” Shane Mosley flew to the Philippines to start drumming up some interest for a charity event penciled for May. The event will feature many former boxing world champions coming over to raise funds for the victims of recent calamities here in the Philippines.

During the press conference held at the Fairmont Hotel in Makati, all the questions eventually led to Manny Pacquiao. And with that came more questions about Timothy Bradley and Floyd Mayweather.

Mosley who lost to Pacquiao in 2011 said Pacquiao’s speed is his best asset.

“His punches were difficult to block. He was like a machine gun,” Mosley said. “There are like three or four punches at a time. It was different. He was very quick and he had pretty good power on his punch.”

However, the former lightweight, welterweight, and super welterweight champion of the world also thinks that Pacquiao is not the same fighter he faced before.

“When I saw him now, he didn’t seem as aggressive as he used to be. Maybe that’s the type of fighter he is now,” Mosley said. “Manny Pacquiao is a good hearted person. When he was younger maybe he wouldn’t let the guy go the distance but now that he’s older, he’s probably saying ‘Okay, I won. I’ll let you go the distance.’ Or maybe he’s afraid of trying too hard like what happened with [Juan Manuel] Marquez.”

Mosley knows exactly what this feels as Pacquiao also carried him in the closing rounds of their 2011 fight.

Talking about the Pacquiao-Bradley fight, Mosley’s opinion was similar to most boxing observers.

“I was one of the guys that thought Manny won,” the American fighter said. “But I do think Bradley did better than what the commentators thought. They made it seem that Pacquiao walked away with it.”

Mosley added that Pacquiao should perform better if the two were to fight again but warned that this is not a sure thing. “I think that Pacquiao knows exactly what to do with a Bradley type of fighter. But when you start getting into that age, that’s when your body changes a little bit. So I don’t know. Bradley is still young.”

As with most boxing interviews, the Mayweather-Pacquiao question was also hurled at Mosley. “I definitely think they need to fight for boxing,” he answered. “They are the two top guys. Styles make fights so you never know what’s going to happen. I think it could happen.”

However, he inserted caveats for Pacquiao before the mega-fight could be made. “Manny is going to have to really want the fight to make it happen,” Mosley explained. “He’s going to take a real hit on the financial part. Floyd’s not going to fight for charity.”

Mosley fought Mayweather back in 2010. He also lost via unanimous decision. With his experience in fighting both Mayweather and Pacquiao, he has a good vantage point on how the mega-fight could play out.

“I think Mayweather has the edge because of his speed and his defense but I also think that Manny can hurt Mayweather which could change the entire story of the fight. We really can’t know for sure because styles make fights in boxing,” Mosley said.

“The one who fought a better fight against me won’t necessarily win over the other.”
