MANILA, Philippines - Terrence Romeo delivered another marvelous performance as Far Eastern University survived another thriller to beat past University of the Philippines, 71-70, and regain a piece of the lead in the 75th UAAP basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Romeo posted a new career-high 24 points aside from posting nine rebounds and eight assists in 35 minutes although the Tamaraws had to weather off a late rally by the Maroons in the final eight minutes to register their fifth win in six outings.
The victory was a morale-booster for the Morayta-based cagers heading into Sunday's marquee clash with defending champion Ateneo with the winner gaining the top spot at the end of the first round.
FEU coach Bert Flores, however, is still in dilemma.
FEU enjoyed a commanding 68-53 lead on a Cris Tolomia trey with less than eight minutes to go but UP came storming back when Alvin Padilla sank a three with 1:52 left to pull within 71-69.
UP's Mark Lopez had a chance to force an extension when he was fouled with exactly five ticks remaining. The graduating guard made the first free throw but missed the second, allowing Romeo to sink two charities for the final score.
The Maroons remained winless in five games.
