Teng siblings clash on UAAP opening day

UST's Jeric Teng lays the ball in while brother Jeron of DLSU looks on in this bit of preseason action.

The Teng brothers are set for an early face-off as University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University square off in the opening day twinbill of the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament that unfurls on June 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The elder Teng, Jeric, is tipped to the lead the charge for the Growling Tigers, last year’s losing finalists, who are expected to have their hands full against the retooled Green Archers, spearheaded by last season’s top rookie Jeron, in the opening day’s featured match set at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.

Battling in the 2 p.m. opener are Far Eastern University and the University of the East, with both teams eager to bounce back from disappointing campaigns last season.

Five-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, opens its bid against pre-season favorite National University while Adamson takes on University of the Philippines on June 30.

The Blue Eagles and the Green Archers rekindle their much-storied rivalry on July 7 set at 3:30 p.m at the MOA Arena, with the league officials set to impose a separate ticketing scheme anew.

The highly-anticipated match-up between the Blue and the Green comes after the collision of the Tamaraws and the Fighting Maroons slated at 11 a.m.

Another much-awaited battle, the finals rematch between Ateneo and UST on July 30, culminates the 14 playing-date schedule approved by the league during its regular board meeting on Thursday.

In the first round, there will be nine playdates set to be played at the MOA Arena while the remaining five–notably the last three–are scheduled at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Meanwhile, the league takes a two-week respite prior to the start of the second round on Aug. 14 as the country hosts the Fiba-Asia championship set on Aug.-11 at the MOA Arena.

In other developments, the league has also approved to play its weekday games on Wednesday instead of Thursday.

Adamson University, this season’s host, has formally named former pro league star Chito Loyzaga as the league’s commissioner in lieu of Ato Badolato.
