Uniform choices raise eyebrows on UAAP hoops opening day

DLSU's taciturn tactician, Juno Sauler, is known for his low-key, no-nonsense manner. But on Saturday he and his coaching sous chefs were kitted out in these eye-catching matching outfits, to the surprise of many.

The rather unconventional look has led us to the following conclusions here at the Yahoo! Philippines College Hoops desk, long an underrated bastion of sartorial wisdom.

One, unless you are Rory McIlroy navigating Augusta National's Amen Corner on Masters Sunday, wearing kelly green pants is difficult to pull off. And two, there may be some fashion items that complement green pants well, but perhaps a green necktie isn't one of them.

The threads spawned a few comments on the Twitterverse, as you can see here.

One La Sallian friend said it reminded him of their La Salle Zobel uniform from high school. I say it harks back to the late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, who was very fond of donning a blindingly white athletic jacket at games.

At any rate it is difficult to ascertain if the fashion statement was a successful one. But no doubt the defending champs' performance against FEU was not. Mike Tolomia got his season off to a hot start as the Tams prevailed over the Archers, 82-77.

DLSU wasn't the only team taking chances on the fashion front. Earlier in the day UP trotted out these burgundy numbers.

Not really sure about that u-shaped extra large white collar. From a distance it can appear like a baby's bib just before feeding time. Ironically it was UP's opponents, the UE Red Warriors, who showed more hunger, devouring last year's last-place team via a lopsided 87-59 score.

UE, on the other hand, used a crosshatch accent on their tops and shorts, that for me worked, although it sort of reminded me of Jollibee's old Crisscut fries.
