Mad Dash: NFL lineman is a mathematics wizard

In the list of alternative careers for professional athletes, you don't usually expect mathematics to creep up toward the top. Really, if we're all being honest with ourselves, it doesn't rank very high for the rest of us, either. But that's what makes Ravens offensive lineman John Urschel's prowess with numbers all the more impressive. Urschel recently had a paper published in the Journal of Computational Mathematics entitled "A Cascadic Multigrid Algorithm for Computing the Fiedler Vector of Graph Laplacians." (Don't worry, we had to read it about seven times before we could smoothly connect it as a single sentence.) With all that brainpower, it's natural to wonder why Urschel would potentially compromise his health by playing football, but even in light of a player like Chris Borland walking away from the game, Urschel tells The Players' Tribune that he couldn't walk away from the game. He enjoys the contact and the rush that comes with playing the game too much.

One person we feel like should walk away from a sport is Texans cheerleader Antonieta Osuna, but we're not talking about cheerleading or football. We're talking about venturing into Mixed Martial Arts. Osuna recently told TMZ that she's spent enough time boxing in the gym and sparring a bit with good boxers that she thinks she might have a shot with UFC champion Ronda Rousey in the octagon. Yes, she appeared to be serious and coherent throughout this claim. She thinks if she could get a couple jabs in, she could keep Rousey from taking her down quickly. We think she'd be toast before she could give lift a fist. Either way, we'll be tuning in if this fight ever happens.
