100 Olympic Tidbits: Romania's Rowing Champ

Romania’s Elisabeta Lipa has won more medals than any other rower in Olympic history. In six Olympiads, Lipa won a total of eight medals, including five golds. It all began in Los Angeles in 1984, when Lipa won her first gold in double scull. In Seoul, she won a silver in the double scull and a bronze in the quadruple scull. This would be the only Olympics where she would fail to win a gold medal.

Lipa would go on to win one gold each in the next four Olympics, capping off her Olympic career with a gold in the eight with coxswain in Athens in 2004, an event in which she also won the gold in Atlanta and Sydney. Her six Olympic appearances ties 10 other female athletes for second place, and the 20 years between her first and last medals is a distinction she shares with only a handful of Olympic athletes, male or female.
