Brother of Norwegian skier Jacobsen dies

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) — The Norwegian Olympic team says the brother of one of the country's cross-country skiers has died on the eve of the Sochi Olympics.

The team said the brother of Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen died "suddenly and unexpectedly" Friday. It did not provide any further details.

Despite being second in the overall World Cup, Jacobsen had not been picked to compete in Saturday's opening 15-kilometer skiathlon, with Norway entering the skiers who finished in the top four spots at last year's world championships.

The statement said the team had a meeting Friday night to discuss the death, and that Jacobsen "wants her teammates to focus on Saturday's competition."

Jacobsen is a likely member of Norway's squad in the team sprint and relay. It's unclear whether she will stay to compete in Sochi.
