Defense key as Army wins

Titleholder Philippine Army doused Cagayan Valley's fightback and hacked out a 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10 victory yesterday to remain unbeaten in the Shakey's V-League Open at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Army Troopers turned to the stiff defense of Jacqueline Alarca and Tina Salak in the deciding set as they raised their record to 3-0 following wins over Philippine Navy and Far Eastern University.

Alarca was responsible for four of the team's 13 blocks including their last point, where she teamed up with Salak to halt Sutadta Chuewulim's corner spike.

Cagayan absorbed its second straight loss against one win.
