An In-Depth Look at #PBARank (Part 2)

Time to look back at some of the trades that were made to see how balanced they really were, based on the talent level of the players that were involved. Who won? Who lost? Why make the trade? And we will be answering most of them with the use of our #PBARank statistics.

This is going to get really interesting really fast.

Trade #1

Barako Bull Energy Cola acquires
1. Ronjay Buenafe – 6.57
2. Gilbert Bulawan – 3.62

Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters acquire
1. Sean Anthony – 6.06

Meralco Bolts acquire
1. Don Allado – 4.8
2. Jared Dillinger – 6.51

At first glance, you would think that Barako Bull was throwing away some good pieces in this one. You see players like Don Allado and Sean Anthony get traded away and you instantly think that this was a horrible trade. But check it again.

The Energy Cola got the best player available in the trade in Ronjay Buenafe. What did they give up? Sean Anthony who wasn’t getting a ton of minutes on the rotation, Don Allado who was getting even less, and got a player that can sit on the bench and not complain in Gilbert Bulawan.

If you really look at it, Talk ‘N Text was supposed to be the loser in this deal. But, we all know what Coach Norman Black can do for a player. Expect Anthony’s rank to skyrocket come next season.

Trade #2

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel acquires
1. Japeth Aguilar – 7.15

Petron Blaze Boosters acquire
1. Jason Deutchman – 5.05
2. GlobalPorts’s 2016 2nd Round Pick
3. GlobalPorts’s 2017 2nd Round Pick

GlobalPort Batang Pier acquires
1. Jay Washington – 7.38
2. Yousef Taha – 4.38
3. Barako’s 2013 1st Round Pick (from TNT)

Barako Bull Energy Cola acquires
1. Elmer Espiritu – 5.05

GlobalPort should be on the Most Wanted list for this one. Talk about a steal and a half here. A J-Wash for Japeth swap would’ve been a pretty fair for them as it is. But to get a 1st rounder, and a player like Yousef Taha is more than enough to walk away from this trade with a huge smile on their face. As for the two 2nd rounders? I’d rather have one 1st than two 2nds.

Petron did this, of course, to take in a player that can give spot minutes. The over two point hit on the roster was still not enough to take them off of the top spot in average #PBARank for the whole team. The two 2nds were just to sweeten the pot. Now, time to figure out who in the world will be coming out to the draft in 2016 and 2017.

Barangay Ginebra did fantastic in this trade as well. Giving up two players in a position that were overloaded with others that were around the same average score as the others in order to bring Japeth Aguilar was a steal. They didn’t have to mess around with their rotation and instead found a more than able person to fill in the void that Rudy Hatfield has left behind. And the highlights. Oh, the highlights that will come of this. Yikes.

And again, Barako Bull Energy Cola is involved in a trade. A trade that many will look at and say, “Why in the world would you do this?!” But, let’s take a deeper look at that. Barako gets Elmer Espiritu for the 2013 1st round pick of Talk ‘N Text. How good is that pick? Not very good. Being that TNT will be at the bottom of the order in the upcoming draft.

Based on last year’s draft, the 10th pick was Jason Deutchman. Isn’t that odd. What is Elmer Espiritu’s score? 5.05. What is Deutchman’s? 5.05. Doesn’t seem to be so lopsided now does it? And to take into consideration that this year’s draft could be even shallower than last year and there is more to the trade than what meets the eye.

Trade #3

Air 21 Express acquire
1. Vic Manuel – 5.58
2. Carlo Sharma – 4.14
3. Meralco’s 2016 2nd Round Pick

Meralco Bolts acquire
1. Noy Baclao – 5.14
2. John Wilson – 4.57

Air 21 did some good here. Like I said awhile ago, whenever you bring in the best player in the deal, you are already on the winning side. Getting a former Green Archer for Coach Franz Pumaren and a 2nd rounder was not bad either.

The Meralco Bolts did this to address some needs. The Bolts needed another player than can score while Mac Cardona is still recuperating from his injury and a young big man. Granted, John Wilson takes almost 15 seconds to get a shot off and Noy Baclao still needs to reach his full potential, it didn’t hurt them when trying to make them better.

Trade #4

Petron Blaze Boosters acquire
1. Doug Kramer – 5.86

Barako Bull Energy Cola aqcuires
1. Dorian Peña – 4.88
2. Petron’s 2013 2nd Round Pick (from Ginebra)

Great work here by the Petron Blaze in getting someone like Doug Kramer. Again, getting the best player in the deal will have an immediate impact on a team’s roster and we are already seeing that when Kramer is out on the court. Even though Peña was a starter for them at times, Kramer is definitely a good upgrade for the Blaze Boosters.

As for Barako, this was a deal to get the pick more than the upgrade. It was more about getting assets than it was about making the team better immediately. Do I think that they could’ve gotten a better deal somewhere else with a talent like Doug Kramer? Maybe. Did they lose this deal by a gargantuan margin. Nope.

Trade #5

Barako Bull Energy Cola acquires
1. Wesley Gonzales – 4.02
2. Chris Pacana – 2.43
3. San Mig Coffee’s 2017 2nd Round Pick

San Mig Coffee Mixers acquire
1. Allein Maliksi – 6.73

This is where things get a little tricky. I know that there are so many people that are reacting to this trade. So I won’t even touch it. Those are the numbers that we came upon during the #PBARank survey.
