Draft Focus: Ian Sangalang’s Fit in Mixers is Second to None

Draft Focus: Ian Sangalang’s Fit in Mixers is Second to None

Name: Ian Sangalang

School: San Sebastian College

Instant Analysis: Ian Sangalang is on his way to the second overall pick. The fact that he is not the number one pick is not a knock on his skills, but rather because he is six inches smaller. That is about it. The dude has got a lot of game in him. If only he was almost seven feet tall.

On the offensive end, Sangalang has always been on point. He has great footwork in the paint, a very consistent 15-18 foot jumper, knows how to pass from the post, and a non-stop motor. He was not really given a lot of praise for what he did in college because he was massively overshadowed by Calvin Abueva. But, he is a stud, a proven winner, and don’t even think about seeing him drop further than #2.

The former San Sebastian Stag will be a great fit in the triangle offense of San Mig Coffee because of all of that. He can be that post spot in the triangle in the same way that Sonny Thoss was back when Coach Tim Cone was in Alaska. I think that he might even be a better fit in the system than Greg Slaughter because he is a slightly better passer.

His main concern though is his defensive intensity. Despite averaging 2.17 and 1.42 blocks per game in his last two seasons, you would want to see that a little bit higher. Those were mostly from helpside defense as well. He is a decent defender in the NCAA, but it is a whole new ballgame once he gets to the pros.

Projection: Number 2

Best-case Scenario: Sonny Thoss

Worst-case Scenario: Jervy Cruz
