Draft Focus: Justin Chua Can be a Quality Big Man Off the Bench

Name: Justin Chua

School: Ateneo De Manila University

Instant Analysis: If you’re a team that’s thinking hard of drafting Justin Chua, you must like what he showed in the last D-League Finals when he outplayed Greg Slaughter and the All-Star frontline of the NLEX Road Warriors. You must also remember that he once gave us the “I’m the next Rabeh Al-Hussaini” vibe. You remember when we thought that he would be the next big man that Norman Black would develop as the best big man in college until Greg Slaughter took away all his minutes? You remember how crucial he was against Aldrech Ramos and Reil Cervantes in the UAAP Season 73 Finals? Yes, if you’re seriously considering inking Chua, you’re saying “Hey, this is a legit 6-5 big man who has a steady post and mid-range game. This guy can be sneaky-good.”

But you will have some stuff at the back of your mind too. Like the fact that Justin Chua is not a good rebounder at all; that he only averaged 3.01 rebounds (in 11 minutes of playing time) per game in his last two seasons as a Blue Eagle. You’re also thinking twice because of his inability to finish around the rim. Remember all those bunnies he missed back in college? Yes, those were a lot.

At the least, Justin Chua has enough size and skill to be have a long PBA career. He can be a consistent quality big man coming off the bench for really good PBA teams.

Projection: Late first round

Best-case scenario: 6 ppg and 3rpg off the bench as a rookie (with a lot of potential)

Worst-case scenario: Ford Arao
