Draft Focus: Terrence Romeo Should be a Great Microwave Player Off the Bench

Draft Focus: Terrence Romeo Should be a Great Microwave Player Off the Bench

Name: Terrence Romeo

School: FEU Tamaraws

Instant Analysis: Terrence Romeo is a classic PBA draftee that’s a “tweener” — someone who’s stuck between playing two positions or someone who doesn’t have a natural position. There is no question that he isn’t a point guard, at least not yet. He has played the two-guard since his high school up to his latest MVP year in college so the SG position is his natural. But you can’t put him at the two and match him up on defense against the likes of Caguioa, David, and Yap in the pros. You either have to play him with a big point guard who can defend the opponent’s shooting guard or make him learn the point guard position — which he has to do sooner or later if he wants to be one of the best in the pros.

There’s no question about this kid’s talent. He’s a terrific difficult shot-maker and his ball handling skills are already where it needs to be if he is to play the point guard position in the PBA. For Romeo, it’s all about tempering and managing expectations. Coming off of an MVP season in college, is he expecting that he’ll start or get quality burn in the PBA right out of the bat? Or does he know that he has tons to learn about the point guard position and that it might be best for him to be a microwave scorer off the bench first?

Projection: Anywhere from 4th to 7th. If Barako Bull’s separate deals with Ginebra for the 4th pick and with Petron for the 5th push thru, Terrence Romeo will land on a team where he can be ramped up slowly and learn a lot. If Ginebra picks him at four, he can be that consistent to devastating scoring punch off the bench that Ginebra has been craving for. He might be able to help Petron too. He will complement Chris Ross coming off the bench. Romeo will stretch the floor for Ross while Ross will be able to defend the shooting guard position for Romeo.

Best-case Scenario: 8.0-10.0 ppg off the bench

Worst-case Scenario: A more inconsistent Bonbon Custodio
