Farenas-Velazquez ends in controversial TKO, Penalosa remains undefeated

The much awaited battle between Michael Farenas and Hector Velazquez ended in controversy as it ended in the second round due to a cut in the Mexican's eye brow. There was confusion in the ring as the Mexican camp said the cut came from a head butt and it took minutes before the official decision was read.

While waiting, the two fighters watched the replay of the fight's ending with Farenas trying to say that it came from a punch while Velazquez was shaking his head as he thought it was a clear butt. The replay showed that Farenas was able to connect with good punches but their heads did clash.

However, veteran referee Bruce McTavish ruled that the cut was from a punch to award Farenas a technical knockout victory and the WBC ABCO super feathweight title.

With the win, Farenas improved to 38 wins against four losses and four draws with 30 victories coming via knockout. Velazquez on the other hand dropped to 56 wins against 21 losses and three draws.

Dave Penalosa kept his undefeated record as he scored a unanimous decision victory over the tough Alem Robles, Friday night at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Penalosa, son of former world champion Dodie boy Penalosa Sr. and nephew of Gerry Penalosa, had to survive a few scary moments from the game visitor but he did enough to keep his record immaculate. The Filipino won a six-round unanimous decision 58-56, 58-56, and 59-56.

The first round was more of a feeling out process between the two fighters but the fireworks started early in the second round as Penalosa worked Robles’ body.

The crowd turned dead silent in the fourth round as Penalosa took a big overhand right from his opponent. Robles then attacked a seemingly hurt Penalosa but the young Filipino’s defense held strong.

The fifth round was all about Penalosa going back to his body punching, which won him the round. In the sixth and final round of the fight, Penalosa landed his best punch of the night which was a straight left that buckled the legs of Robles. Sensing he could go for a knockout, Penalosa went in for the kill but the Mexican fought back fiercely which convinced Penalosa to cruise for a decision win instead.

Penalosa raised his record to eight wins without a loss while Robles dropped down to six wins, five losses, and two draws.
