Fil-Canadian Christian David ranked No.1 prospect in Canada’s HS class of 2017

While the likes of Jordan Clarkson and Kobe Paras are currently making their mark as promising ballplayers in the United States, another young cager with Filipino lineage is slowly earning his niche as a rising hoops talent north of the border.

Playing for Bishop Reding Catholic Seconday School in Milton, Ontario, 16-year-old Filipino-Canadian Christian David has emerged as one of the premiere prospects in Canadian basketball.

A 6’5” shooting guard, the underclassman is currently ranked as the top HS player in all of Canada for the class of 2017, based on the classification set by North Pole Hoops (NPH), which is the country’s foremost youth basketball recruiting organization.

Per InsideHalton.com, David’s developing game has earned praise from both from the NPH’s boss and his head coach at Bishop Reding, and has gotten the attention of several top-tier US NCAA Division 1 schools.

“He’s so well-rounded,” stressed Elias Sbiet, a national scout and director of recruiting with NPH. “He’s the full package.”

“His basketball IQ is exceptional and he’s got multiple skill sets at different positions,” echoed Anthony Cordeiro, who coached the elite-level hoopster to the Halton final — and a top-10 provincial ranking — with the 2012/13 Bishop Reding Royals. “I think that’s where his real value is.”

Among David’s accomplishments on the hardwood is an MVP performance at the recent NPH Showcase in Toronto, where he produced 18 points, eight boards and four dimes during the camp’s all-star game.

He was also part of Team Canada at the 2014 adidas Nations tournament held several weeks ago in California. His best game in the meet was in Canada’s 106-83 win over the Asia-Pacific selection, as he went 3-of-3 from the field and 6-of-7 from the stripe in scoring 13 points, while adding four rebounds, plus a steal and a block in 16 minutes of burn.

As proof of the junior’s rising stock, top collegiate programs such as the University of Illinois, St. Bonaventure University, Baylor University, 2013 NCAA D1 national runner-up University of Michigan and 2014 NCAA D1 national champion University of Connecticut (UConn) have all expressed interest in recruiting the Bishop Reding standout.
