First Belgian title for Gent 'Buffalos'
Belgian club Gent sealed the first league title in their 115-year history on Thursday by beating Standard Liege 2-0 on the penultimate day of the play-offs. The three-time Belgian Cup winners' previous best achievement had been reaching the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1992. The club, nicknamed 'The Buffalos' since the visit of Buffalo Bill and his Wild West show to their stadium in 1900, cannot be caught as they hold a five-point advantage on FC Bruges. Winning the league seals an automatic spot in the Champions League next season, with the runners-up, who have yet to be decided, playing the qualifying round. Favourites Anderlecht, FC Bruges and Standard Liege had been taken by surprise by the performance of Gent this season, competing in their new ultra-modern stadium since 2013.
