Despite poor shooting in the early stages, Gilas Pilipinas managed to escape with an 81-76 win against the Neptunas Klaipeda basketball club at the start of its friendly games in Lithuania Thursday night at the Vakaru Laivu Gamykla BLRT Grupp gymnasium in Palanga, Lithuania.
Only a photo of the final score was posted in his Twitter @josh_reyes by national team assistant coach Josh Reyes, son of Gilas Pilipinas mentor Chot Reyes.
It has a photo caption that reads, "Good win but still lots to improve on. Overcame a really bad start vs this big & great shooting team." Neptunas Klaipeda, coached by Kazys Maksvytis, is currently the fourth ranked team in the Lithuanian Basketball League and also plays in the VTB United League.
The elder Reyes said he did not post any details of the game so as to keep the statistics from scouts of other teams that the national team will play in the FIBA-Asia Championship here on Aug. 1 to 11. Gilas is in Group A with Jordan, Chinese Taipei and Saudi Arabia.
"Tweeps, apologies for not being too detailed in the games. Hesitant to even post d stats. Dami nating ginagawang bago. Mahirap na masilip," said Reyes on his own Twitter account @coachot.
He added: "Suffice it to say for now things are going well. Learning curve is steep. We enjoy d struggle, but d bond is deep."
The national team, which is in a two-week training in Lithuania under former Lithuanian national team coach Kestutis Kemzura, will play Friday night Bitrono of the Lithuania National League.
