Boycie Zamar axed as head coach of UE Warriors

Boycie Zamar will no longer be coaching the University of the East Red Warriors in the upcoming UAAP season. Carmelita G. Mateo, the team manager of the UE Red Warriors, confirmed this with a statement released by the school.

“Mr. David 'Boycie' Zamar will no longer be the Head Coach of the UE Red Warriors Men’s Basketball eam effective April 1, 2014,” the statement read. “UE Management feels that the Warriors’ head coach must be one who will handle the team full-time, one without commitments to other teams.”

Aside from being the head coach of the Red Warriors in the UAAP, Zamar also served as an assistant coach for the Petron Blaze Bossters who are now known as the San Miguel Beermen in the PBA. During the professional league’s off season, Zamar moved to the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings also as an assistant coach.

Last season, rumors circulated that Zamar was being considered to be Ginebra’s next head coach as Ato Agustin was only hired in an interim capacity. Zamar wrote a letter to the UE management to reaffirm his commitment to the Red Warriors. However, it was not enough to make him keep his job this time around.

“The development allows Mr. Zamar and his coaching staff freedom to attend to their respective commitments outside the UE Red Warriors,” the statement continued. “The University will announce next week as to who will take over as the Red Warriors’ Head Coach.”

This comes at the heels of the announcement of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers that Bong dela Cruz would be their head coach for the upcoming UAAP season, replacing Pido Jarencio.

The UE Red Warriors were hopeful that they could snag a Final Four slot in the last UAAP season but they only managed a 7-7 win-loss record to finish sixth.

Zamar had two stints with the UE Red Warriors as he was the head coach during the time of James Yap and Paul Artadi. He was replaced by Dindo Pumaren in 2004 but he was given a second tour of duty in UAAP Season 75, replacing Jerry Codinera after the first round of eliminations.
