Kelvin Davis delighted with 'perfect' return to Southampton team

Kelvin Davis has hailed his "perfect" return to Southampton's first team, after keeping a clean sheet against Reading in a 1-0 victory.

The 36-year-old lost his place in the team to Paulo Gazzaniga after conceding six at Arsenal earlier in the season, only featuring once in the Capital One Cup between the thrashing at the Emirates Stadium in September and the win over the Royals on December 6.

“I knew that Gazza was struggling and the manager had a decision to make in whether to play me or Artur – and I felt that he made right decision,” Davis told the club's matchday program.

“Coming back into the team, you want the perfect scenario, and for me that was a clean sheet and a win. It was also nice that it was the victory that pushed us out of the bottom three.

“It was good to hear my name being sung again because that’s something you miss – I’ve come a long way with these supporters and I can’t speak highly enough of them.

“When I got home, I felt like I had contributed and put my work in to help the club move forward.”

The Saints were out of action last week due to Chelsea's Club World Cup commitments, and face fellow league strugglers Sunderland on Saturday.

SHUTTING THEM OUT

Davis was relegated from the top flight while a player at the Stadium of Light, and is looking to get one over on his former club and help the Saints climb the table.

“My time up there wasn’t a happy time,” the 36-year-old admitted. “No goalkeeper wants to be relegated, and it certainly wasn’t a fun time in my life.

“So much water has gone under the bridge now that it doesn’t really matter – for me, this is just another game and an opportunity for three points.

“It’s now up to us to put them below us in the league – the more teams that are below us, the happier we’ll be. We’ve been on a nice little run, and it’s important to beat the teams that are around you in the league.

“This will be a tough, tough test at home but, if we can get to Boxing Day close to the 20-point mark, then we’ve done very well considering the start that we had.”
