Matias Rodriguez: I would play for Chile over Argentina

Universidad de Chile wing-back Matias Rodriguez has affirmed that he would consider representing his adopted home at international level should the opportunity arise, although his dream is still to pull on the jersey of his native Argentina.

The 26-year-old former Boca player is barely known in Argentina, but has become a star across the Andes thanks to his excellent performances for the Primera Division and Copa Sudamericana holders.

Albiceleste coach Alejandro Sabella recently affirmed that he is keeping an eye on Rodriguez's development, as he considers alternatives for the problematic wide positions.

Speaking on Tuesday, however, Matias admitted that should he receive the chance to play for Claudio Borghi's Chile team, he would not hesitate in accepting the offer.

"I would not have a problem playing for Chile if I was able to become a citizen because I know that I would have a great opportunity, more so than in Argentina," the player told La Tercera, while pointing out that he would have to wait three more years to be eligible.

"It is a dream [to play for Argentina], I have not received any calls but my agent has. I know that I have been watched on a couple of occasions."

Rodriguez and Universidad are back in action on Thursday evening, when they close out their Copa Libertadores group campaign against Atletico Nacional, with both teams already qualified for the next stage.
