Murray consolidates third place in ATP rankings

Andy Murray's clay-court win in the Munich Open on Monday helped the Scot strengthen his grip on third place in the updated ATP rankings. The 27-year-old claimed the first clay-court title of his career by seeing off Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in a tough three-setter 7-6 (7/4), 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) in just over three hours in the rain-delayed final. He became the first British player to win an ATP clay-court tournament since Englishman Christopher "Buster" Mottram in April 1976. On Sunday, Roger Federer clinched his 85th career title in Istanbul but remains second in the unchanged ATP rankings, still led by Novak Djokovic. The 27-year old Serb holds the top spot for the 40th consecutive week, more than 5,000 points ahead of the Swiss while 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadael is fourth ahead of the Madrid Open.
