Pacquiao focusing on his speed advantage for megafight versus Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao celebrates his victory over Chris Algieri at the end of their world welterweight championship boxing bout in Macau on November 23, 2014

Reigning WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is already busy preparing for the biggest fight of his life on May 2 [May 3 in Manila] against WBC champion Floyd Mayweather.

Even before the fight was announced, Pacquiao was already doing light training to prepare his body for the long road ahead. However, after Mayweather officially made the fight announcement, Pacquiao’s training has increased in intensity.

“Light training pa lang naman ang ginagawa natin ngayon. Nine weeks before the fight pa naman. Pero in the next three weeks tataas na yung intensity ng training natin,” said Pacquiao in an interview with GMA News TV’s Balita Pilipinas.

Asked whether he’ll be doing anything new to prepare for Mayweather, Pacquiao refused to give away vital information.

“May mga gagawin tayong mga bagong training syempre pero di na natin i-a-announce ang mga yan. Syempre serkreto na muna natin yan,” he said. “Basta ang focus ko lang ngayon ay yung speed natin.”

Pacquiao also took time to thank Mayweather for finally agreeing to fight him. Mayweather’s camp has been busy trying to tell the world that the undefeated American was the one who sought out the megafight even if Pacquiao called him out immediately after beating Chris Algieri back in November.

“Nagpapasalamat ako na pumirma na siya sa kontrata finally. Five years in the making na rin ito pero sa wakas matutuloy na,” Pacquiao said.

Asked if he think he could knock Mayweather out, Pacquiao once again issued his patented answer.

“Hindi natin masasabi kung anong mangyayari sa laban. Si God lang ang tanging may alam niyan. Ang trabaho lang naming dalawa ay maghanda para sa laban,” he said.  “Ang importante lang 100% focused tayo physically, mentally, and most importantly spiritually.”
