Pakistan: Bomb kills police officer, 2 others

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani official says a bombing in the country's south targeted a police officer known for his anti-militant campaigns, killing him and his two friends.

Pir Mohammad Shah says the bomb aimed at officer Shafiq Tanoli exploded on Thursday morning in downtown Karachi, a port city in southern Pakistan.

He says the explosion appeared to be a suicide bombing but that police are still investigating. The blast also wounded two people.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but Shah says Tanoli, who survived several attempts on his life in the past, was targeted for his active campaigning against terrorists.

Pakistani government has been trying to negotiate a peace deal with the Taliban in efforts to end years of fighting that has killed thousands of people.
