Report: Pacquiao plans to quit boxing in 2016

This early, Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao is already bracing himself for a bigger battle ahead.

If plans don't miscarry, the 35-year-old Pacquiao intends to hang up his gloves in 2016 as he seeks a spot in the Senate with the help of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) headed by Vice President Jejomar Binay.

“There’s a big possibility that I will run for Senate. UNA has asked me to join its slate, and I’m grateful for that,” the eight-division world champion told television host Anthony Taberna in a recent interview in ABS-CBN's “Tapatan Ni Tunying."

That could mean Pacquiao, who currently serves as the lone representative of Sarangani in the Lower House, would only have four possible blockbuster matches before calling it quits in two years’ time.

Pacquiao is already scheduled to defend his World Boxing Organization welterweight title against promising American Chris Mark Algieri on November 22 in Macau.

An encounter with American superstar and undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr., which boxing fans around the world have long been craving for, is also a possibility although the American has repeatedly shown no interest in fighting Pacquiao.

Aside from his political services and boxing commitments, Pacquiao has also submitted his application for this year's PBA rookie draft where he is expected to be selected by expansion team Kia Motors to become its playing coach for the 2014-2015 season.
