San Mig Super Coffee Mixers Aims to Stop Rampaging Batang Pier

WHAT THIS GAME MEANS

Three straight W’s against three quality teams. The Global Port Batang Pier go into this game after rampaging thru Meralco, Rain or Shine, and then Alaska. Those quality W’s were a function of the leadership shown by double-double (20 ppg and 10 ppg) machine Jay Washington and The Sol Train. And if you have good leaders you most certainly have to have good followers for the dynamic to work. Global Port’s two rookie sensations, Terrence Romeo (16 ppg) and RR Garcia (11 ppg), have surprisingly flourished under the direction of Sol Mercado and Coach Richie Ticzon. For the Batang Pier, this game is about continuing the good things that they have been doing in the streak. Really, this game against a struggling SMC team is about maintaining that beautiful dynamism between its veterans and rookies.

For the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers, this game is about building on their last win against the Barako Bull Energy Cola. Yes, there shouldn’t be much glory in beating a reeling team, but for an SMC team that’s only starting to get healthy and that awkwardly finds itself near the bottom of the standings, every win is valuable. This game gives them an opportunity to jell as a complete team while integrating everything that’s new with the team (Ian Sangalang, and Marc Pingris and Mark Barroca being the two best players).

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

Physicality.

You guys remember the last these two teams met???

Ding!

A Royal Rumble that saw Marc Pingris slap-punch Kelly Nabong and the latter showing MMA execution on his knee-to-the-head attempt ensued. Of course everything is water under the bridge. Kelly Nabong apologized to everyone including Marc’s family while Pingris apologized to his fans. Let’s see which team/player (if Nabong plays) tries a more subdued approach which one will play naturally.

WHO TO WATCH OUT FOR

Marc Pingris.

Pingris has dropped three double-doubles in SMC’s last four games. Ping is warming up and he might be slowly realizing that James Yap is done being a superstar. It’s time for him to show who really is and has been the best player on this team for more than a year now.
