Pregame ritual: I load up on carbs with pasta like carbonara with no ham in it. And then music lang.

Song-on-repeat: Just to pump me up lang…Dubstep (laughs).

In-game kicks: Ever since, I’ve always liked the adidas Pro Model.

Post-game kicks: Topsiders!

Needs to improve on: Offense, specifically the 13 to 18-foot jumper and some moves at the post. A big man with a nice touch from around the basket to 18 feet is quite critical in Bo Perasol’s offense. Ateneo’s attack calls for tons of big-man-on-guard downscreens. So when the defense tries to cover the guard that comes off of screens and leaves a Blue Eagle big open, that PF or C should be ready and confident to let it fly.

Another thing that Jay needs to improve or add is weight and strength. Yes, he’s quite lengthy and agile for a big. But at 190 pounds, he’s dog meat to college guys like Jason Perkins or Charles Mami.

Seniors ready: Jay Javelosa is much like Nick Collison. His basketball IQ is off the charts. He’s a great pick/screen setter, a very good passing big man, a very good post defender (in high school, that’s why he needs to eat way more cheeseburgers and lift more weights to be able to maintain his ability to stop college bigs at the post), and he’s very tough. HIs main purpose on offense will be not to put the ball in the hoop himself, but to make everything easier for Kiefer, Von, Chris, Nico, and Koko.

Projection: It might take time for the Reedley star to get stronger and to improve his offense. That’s why I see him getting minimal rubber burn in his first year. But he’s too smart, too experienced and accomplished (just check all the tournaments he was on and all the award he’s won above) not to contribute significantly in the long run.
