“Hindi po ako gaano ka-athletic katulad ni Thirdy, hindi po ako kasing laki at kasing lakas nina Arvin, pero masipag po ako. Lahat po ng kahinaan ko, pinupunan ko ng pawis at tiyaga. Para po makasabay ako sa mga big names, doble-doble pong pagsisikap ang gagawin ko.”

Talk about dropping bombs. If anything, lethal lefty JJ Domingo is aware of certain weaknesses in his game. Maybe his style doesn’t turn a lot of heads. Maybe he’s too low-key. But a kid with a tremendous ambition, coupled with the drive to make people remember his name, is always a killer combination. From what I saw during the Rising Stars scrimmage, JJ Domingo is going to make former Tamaraw Jeff Chan proud with his southpaw shooting from outside the arc. He has a quick trigger on his pull-up and he displayed an ability to slice through defenses and finish high at the rim. He plays tough defense and has quick hands. Being a former football player helped refine his footwork, as he played competitively until the 4th grade when he decided to focus on basketball. And he started learning the game from scratch. That makes 5 years of learning the game from basically zilch and reaching UAAP Juniors level ball.

Should he debut in a Tamaraws uniform (in our interview he said he was still considering DLSU or Mapua other than FEU), he’s going to fill a void left by gunners RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo. He’s taller than both RR and Terrence at 6 feet, but will he be strong enough to take it hard to the rack at 135 lbs? In the scrimmage, he got knocked down by screens a couple times and fell down after colliding with Prince Rivero in mid-air. His outside shooting and length at the 2 spot will allow him to put some points together here and there, but give the kid a few years before he truly comes into his own as the Tamaraws’ next great scorer.
