SLAM Rising Stars: Richard Escoto

Name: Richard Escoto

Height: 6’3″

Weight: 198 lbs.

Age: 16

High School: FEU-Fern

Committed to: Far Eastern University

Achievements/Awards won: UAAP S75 Juniors Champion, SEABA U-16 Champion, 2013 FIBA Asia U-16 First Runner-Up

Pre-game ritual: Takes his vitamins. Seriously.

Song on repeat: None

In-game kicks: Anything Nike. But mostly LeBrons.

Post-game kicks: Sebago boat shoes

Seniors ready: Not yet but getting there.

Richard grew up playing the center position but has slowly been transitioning to the four spot. But with the height and length of players in the seniors, no to mention the presence of imports, he either has to put on a lot of muscle or learn to play as far down as a small forward.

Needs work on: A consistent mid-range jay.

And he’ll probably learn that eventually. Remember that this kid is and will continue to play for FEU. And that school, before producing top guards, banked on versatile bigmen who can work the wings and shoot from the perimeter. One of those guys is actually the PBA’s reigning MVP.

If Richard can get those jays dropping on a consistent basis, it should give him some edge in the college ranks.

Projection: Aldrech Ramos.

Right now, Richard can’t quite be called FEU’s next bigtime big man. But hey, the kid’s 16 years old. There’s a lot of room to grow – even physically.

When he steps into the collegiate ranks, expect some time of confusion on what position he’d really like to assume. But he seems to be a guy that would be perfect for a stretch forward. And like I said, FEU has had a handful of good guys playing that role.
