Sporting wins to delay Benfica's title

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Sporting Lisbon won 1-0 at Belenenses on Saturday to secure at least a second-place finish in the Portuguese league and delay Benfica's title for at least one day.

Benfica can clinch what would be its 33rd league title on Sunday with a win over Olhanense.

Sporting guaranteed its automatic Champions League berth by finishing in the top two spots.

Sporting midfielder Adrien Silva converted a 52nd-minute penalty for the winner after Carlos Mane was fouled by Joao Meira.

Sporting's Marcos Rojo was sent off in the 80th with a red card for a tackle on Jorge Rojas.

Also, Nacional routed Pacos Ferreira 5-0 on the road, Maritimo beat Academica 3-1 at home, and Estoril was held to 0-0 at Gil Vicente.
