Erase XFoliant leaned on late first half surge to defeat Informatics, 79-68, in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup yesterday at the Arellano University gym in Legarda, Manila.
Jett Vidal, Nate Matute, Macky Acosta and Marlon Gomez led the onslaught as the Erasers of coach Aric del Rosario won their second straight for a 2-1 slate.
Vidal topscored for Erase with 19 points despite a 5-of-12 shooting from the field while the lefty Gomez posted 10 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Acosta and Matute added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Like in their 91-78 win over erstwhile unbeaten Cagayan at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Erase XFoliant needed another big run to pull away and stay second behind unbeaten and defending champion NLEX and Big Chill.
The Erasers went on a 12-2 run in the final five minutes of the second for a 40-33 halftime lead - thanks to the efforts of Matute and Acosta.
Vidal and Gomez then joined the pair in a fiery third where Erase XFoliant outscored the Icons, 24-12, for a commanding 64-45 advantage.
Moncriff Rogado and Far Eastern University forward Carl Bryan Cruz had 18 points for the Icons but their efforts went down the drain.
The Icons held a 31-28 lead halfway through the second period behind Marvin Hayes, Arbee Mangahas and Mark Benitez before the Erasers launched a counter-offensive.
Cagayan Valley, however, redeemed itself by downing CaféFrance, 85-70, in the second game for its third win in four starts.
The Bakers slipped to 1-1, tying Fruitas and Cebuana Lhuillier for fifth-to-seventh spots.
From a slim 44-41 halftime lead, the Rising Suns poured on the heat in the third to rip the game wide apart, 70-56, going into the final 10 minutes.
